The Masks We Wear

In our everyday lives at school, work, or wherever we are, there is always someone who seems to be perfect–having the perfect life, the perfect friendships, the perfect… everything. That’s not true, not true at all!

Those people who seem to be “perfect” are wearing what some people call a mask. This mask is like a disguise, hiding what really goes on in our lives. When people are upset and the “perfect” person is comforting them and saying, “I understand,” most of the time if the upset person is really mad, they would be saying or at least thinking, “How would you know? You have everything so easy.” Saying this usually makes the comforter feel upset because they know that that’s not true. Whenever this happens, drama can start, and we need to fix that.

The big question is, “What can we do?” We need to fix this problem, but how?

Here are some things we could and can do:

  1. We can comfort the person who is suffering and understand no one has a perfect life.
  2. We MUST understand that when the comforter says they aren’t perfect, THEY’RE NOT!
  3. We need to understand that we must respect everyone’s boundaries.
  4. We need to know that the mask is just something we all use; no one is actually what their masks say they are.
  5. We must continue to comfort these people even when we’re jealous of their “perfection.”

Let us continue to help people unveil their masks and understand that they are not alone, and they will never ever be alone.
